Michael Jackson - Captain EO Lives On In Our Imagination
Author: Mike
The sad news of the sudden passing of Michael Jackson takes us back to one of the most famous attractions at EPCOT. Michael Jackson in Captain EO in the Imagination pavilion was a ground breaking production. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, executive-produced by George Lucas it cost more thanĀ 30 million dollars to produce. At the time, it made the 17 minute film the most expensive ever produced.
I saw it the first time shortly after it premiered in 1986 when I was part of the media gathering for the Disney 15th anniversary weekend. The film took the 3D experience to a new height, but the music made it worth many repeat experiences.
Ironically, just a few days ago I watched Thriller again and I was struck by the similarities in the dance moves to Captain EO. I then searched for the old video. Pleasantly I found the full video. You can view it below. Michael Jackson’s own YouTube channel didn’t have it. I’m sure that some Disney ownership issues caused that omission.
Though there are obvious reasons that lead to Disney distancing themselves from Jackson, it is just as obvious that they will likely never have the luck of an attraction that had such a mass appeal by such a big star at the peak of a career. Viewing the video takes us back to a happier, more innocent time in many ways.
